STAMP DRAW WINNER:  We are pleased to announce the latest winner in our stamp draw is Cathy Potosky of Langley, British Columbia.  Congratulations to Cathy!  That is the third straight winner from the Lower Mainland.  The numbers were down in the draw, but up for the website as a whole.  So, that tells me some of you are giving up...'You can't win if you don't enter'!  The new stamp draw is ready to go.  There are three new stamps for our latest prize, Emily Hull's latest Snowman 501-B, Musical Notes 509-AA, and my latest script Believe 506-AA.

We also have another winner to announce; our previous customer draw for a $50 gift certificate. This was fun one to do, because of all the familiar names, and we did it the old fashion way, with all the names on slips of paper in a hat.  OK, OK I am getting to it.....the winner is  Lynda MacLellan from Antigonish, Nova Scotia!   I felt really great when Lynda's name came out of the hat, because she has organized lots of orders for us from the stampers in Anagonish.  Congratulations Lynda!  I have not notified Lynda yet.  I figure there are at least 8 other stampers in Antigonish who might enjoy letting her know first hand!  Thanks to everyone who took part.  We will do it again at 100,000 hits on the site, and at the rate we are going it will not take as long to get there!

DSCF0040.JPG (375641 bytes)AROUND THE STUDIO:  The woods are full of babies!  There are five little nuthatches on the tree trunks outside our studio windows.  There is a tremendous amount of verbal instruction going on as mother teaches the little ones how to find bugs in the bark of the trees.  There are puffy speckled breasted robins trying out their new wings. A couple having come close to taking my head off as they perfect their art of flying.  On the back porch of the studio a little Junco has made a nest on an Old Island sign I had stuck under the eave for temporary storage.  Her little eggs look like tiny jelly beans.  There is a very noisy family of house wrens in a birdhouse out in the garden.  The quail are running all over the place.  The males are staking out the high ground to lookout for their brood, which consists of just the 'mother to be' at this time.  'Mother to be' is practicing her broken wing routine to try and lure my disinterested dog away from her brood.  The only problem is she is still carrying her brood with her!...Well, it is good practice anyway.  The male makes a wonderful photo-op perched on top of the cherub's head in the bird bath.  However, I cannot get close enough to him with my digital camera to get the shot.  This is the best I could do.  Is he gorgeous or what?

Visitors to the Studio will be happy to know we have now completed the renos to the outhouse!...and if I do say so myself it looks smashing!  I would put this outhouse up against any...if it even qualifies as an outhouse anymore.  Be sure to check it out if you drop by this summer!

We are busy as beavers around the studio right now.  We are getting ready to take part in the Out of Hand Craft Fair at Folkfest in Victoria from June 28th to July 1st.   The Festival runs for 9 days, however, we are only going to be there for the first 4.  We will have most of our stamps with us, and all of our unmounteds.  We hope to see many of you there.  For more information on either Out of Hand or the Folffest Festival itself, click on the "Where to Find Us" page on our home page for links to both.

MARGARET'S MUSINGS:  If you have had an opportunity to see our display at anytime over the past few years, you would have seen sample cards by our friend Margaret Appleton. Margaret is always trying something new, and comes up with some great effects with our stamps. She has agreed to write a short piece for each newsletter on stamping in general and on techniques slightly beyond the basics.

Shadow stamps, metallic inks and powders and dark paper….a recipe for stamping success! Gold, silver, and copper inks and powders used on black, navy and dark green papers are a great combination.

I used the smaller shadow stamp and my metallic inks to stamp "random rectangles" all over a piece of navy blue cardstock. I overstamped some of the shapes. That step is enough to give you a neat background and now you can stamp a main image over top using navy ink or stamp an image on to another small piece of paper and then mount it to the metallic background. That can all be mounted to white or whatever you choose.

Metallics_1.jpg (174381 bytes)I decided to go one more step so I cut the metallic background into strips about ¾" wide. I mixed the strips up, stamped navy blue stars on to each of the strips and then mounted them to a piece of white cardstock( showing white spaces between the strips and a white border all around). I mounted that to a navy piece and then to a copper piece. Across the front of the whole thing I attached a piece of softly coloured vellum upon which I had stamped a greeting using navy ink and clear embossing powder. I used gold star brads to attach the vellum.

The "random rectangles" can be stamped on to dark paper with a watermark pad and each time have Pearl Ex powder applied . That makes a wonderful background. You can also stamp metallic shapes by stamping with Encore or Brilliance ink and use those as a background.

Using the large shadow stamp, try applying different coloured metallic inks in different places all over the rubber. Then stamp on to a piece of dark paper. For this and for each time I used metallic ink on my stamps I "misted" the inked rubber after the initial stamping and was able to get 1 or 2 more stampings out of that ink. Either apply it to the project you are working on or have another paper close by and "clean" all that metallic ink off the stamp on to the other paper and then use it for a background on another card. The ink is far too wonderful to wipe off and waste. I placed my first stamping slightly off the center of a piece of black cardstock and then misted and stamped all around the edges.

Metallics_2.jpg (78334 bytes)The pointed corners of the stamp pads can be used to apply ink just around the edges of the shadow stamp rubber. They end up looking like stegasurus spikes all around the edge! When you then stamp on to dark cardstock you have an image with an open area in the center because there was no ink on the stamp. That open area is a great place to stamp a greeting of some sort or a smaller image or whatever. The points that are applied around the edge of the shadow stamp do not all have to be the same colour.

Three more sample cards from Margaret's last shadow stamp musings.

STEVE'S PICK OF THE MONTH:  I have decided to feature one of our "Old Island Classics" as a 'stamp of the month' each month.  The stamp will be available to you at half price with a minimum order between Stamp Draw dates.   I have decided not to go with an old classic this month.  I am so taken by the things we are stamping with the shadow stamps that I have decided to make them the stamp of the month; either one, Shadow Stamp 490-D or 492-F.  If you are placing an order and do not have a shadow stamp, I really encourage you to try one.

FROM THE E-MAILBAG - Q. (From Parksville, BC) When I clicked the link you sent me for the new newsletter, all I got was the old one I had read already.  What gives?
A. Web browsers store the pages you visit, so that if you decide to go back to that page it is already on your computer and you do not have to download it again from the Internet.   It is much quicker.  So when you click the link to our newsletter,  you computer loads the copy it has instead of downloading the new one.  I am not familiar with all browsers, however, in Internet Explorer you just need to click Refresh on the View drop-down menu.  All browsers will have some sort of Refresh View option.

Q. (From Ireland)  Do you ship to Europe?  A. Yes, we ship literally all over the world, and the postal rates on our small parcels are really quite reasonable.  If you are not in a hurry, they are downright cheap.  Just send us a list of what you would like and we will send you an exact quote including shipping.
CHALK INK WARNING -   Trudy loves the new chalk inks from ColorBox, however, we have discovered a problem with them and our acrylic mounting blocks.  If you allow the ink to dry on your block, it does not come off!  The only way we could get it off was to use so much elbow grease, that we scratch the surface of the block.  Once the block is not shinny smooth it will not hold the static cling.  So, be very careful, and wipe the ink off before it dries.  If anyone has any secret way of getting it off after it dries, please let us know and we will pass it along.
THE WEBSITE I have added six new stamps to the Latest Images page.  There are some much requested musical notes, a new Believe script and 3 new Christmas images from Emily Hull.  There are also some new butterflies of Emily's on the Drawing Board.  Cindy Kerry has done a complete up-date of our Stamp Links pages, again.  There are lots of galleries to explore for ideas.  If you have you have up-dated information for our links pages please let us know and we will pass it along.

The new catalogue was not ready to download when I said it was in the last newsletter.   That was my mistake.  It is now.  If your catalogue is up to date it should have 34 pages.   The catalogue is of course FREE!  Please, note there is one catalogue for printing and one catalogue for viewing on-line.  The printing catalogue is no good for viewing (way, way too slow), and the viewing catalogue is no good for printing (the images will not print in their actual size or clarity). So, make sure you use the right one for your purposes.

Just a reminder that we have discontinued fifty more stamps from our line.  I have re-opened the Discontinued section of the On-line Catalogue, and moved all of these newly discontinued stamps there.  We offer the discontinued stamps at half price with a minimum order for as long as they last. (This means you cannot order just discontinued stamps)  They are 50% off, however the volume discount will not apply to discontinued items.  Also, please note that all of the discontinued stamps will be available at our studio, and that the unmounteds will sell there for $1 each!!

Happy Stamping!
