Potential Behavior Problems

Behavior problems are bound to surface if a dog has been neglected, abused and abandoned. These problems can all be addressed, but you will need patience and commitment. (See our sections on Basic Dog Care and Special Care and More Resources to get started).

- Previously abandoned pets can become so in need of attention that they can become frustrated, anxious and destructive.

- Barking is a normal communication behavior, but pound pets can often develop “enhanced” barking behavior based on their additional need for attention/fears of abandonment.

- Fear aggression is a common issue. Malnutrition can lead dogs to become so food-motivated that they become overly protective of their food. Biting and nipping can be aggression-motivated, or they can be ordinary play-behavior you will have to train your dog to desist from.

- Older pets may never have been trained and thus can be more difficult to train. Dogs who are trained may have accidents when you first bring them home, as they adjust to their new surroundings.

  - Pets may have never had obedience training. They can be resistant to change and be difficult to train.

Not all pound-hounds have behavior problems. Many animal shelters have on-site trainers who prepare dogs for adoption. To take good care of a dog with behavior problems, you will need commitment, care and financial resources.
