Before Coming Home

Teach your family and kids about dog care before adopting. Make sure your family is ready for the changes a dog will bring into your home. There will be plenty of new chores to do. Read, talk to other owners, explain chores.

Divide up the daily chores of caring for your dog. It’s a big responsibility for just one person. (Please note that if you are getting a dog for your child, it is unrealistic to expect the child to do all the work. Ultimately, the adult is responsible for the dog.  Do you have the time to devote to this?)

Remember that young animals and children may not mix well. Make sure your home is prepared for your dog, with segregated play areas for dog and children.
Get your supplies, food and toys before you bring your dog home. You will want everything ready to go…no last minute search for things.
